Hi ladies! My sister who's stationed here sent me some information to add here. I hope it helps out!!!!

Places to visit:
*Chena Hot Springs Resort - They have a natural Hot springs, Ice Hotel, Dog Mushing, Restraunt (The food is probably the best ive had in alaska so far), winter / summer activites (such as snow mobiling, four wheeling, etc), its supposivley the best spot to see the aurora burellas. Heres the website to learn more http://www.chenahotsprings.com/

* Santa's Work Shop, North Pole, AK. Its only about a 15-20 minute drive from Ft. Wainwright. Its Christmas all year around!! Even the town is decorated in Christmas the entire year. At Santa's Work Shop you can see real reindeer. http://www.santaclaushouse.com/

*Denali National Park - During the summer is the best time to go, there are tons of camping, hiking, rafting, and much more oportunities. http://www.nps.gov/dena/index.htm

*Valdez, Alaska - A Few hours drive, but everyone always raves about how great it is to go fishing there. The fish are REALLY BIG and Ive never heard of someone going down there and not catching any fish http://www.ci.valdez.ak.us/

*Knotty Shop - They serve the biggest icecream in town. Its a little gift shop that everyone likes to go to a little bit out of town. All of the wood has knots in them and infront of the building their are sculptures they have made out of the wood. http://knottyshoponline.com/index.php

*Pioneer Park - Its a park with tons of little shops that is a very big tourist attraction in Fairbanks, especially in the summer. The park has tons of activities for children, restraunts, and a train to ride around the entire park. They also have a shop in there where its -40 degree weather all year around. For those who would like to experience our mild winters can go into the room for a few dollars to feel like. http://www.co.fairbanks.ak.us/pioneerpark/

*Fountian Head Antique Car Museum - For those who like to see tons of old cars, this is the place to go!! Theres over 60 historical vehicles in a museum at the wedgewood resort. A few of the cars are only 2 or 3 left in the world http://www.fountainheadhotels.com/

Events to watch out for:
*Golden Day Events - Huge event in town, you will know about it when it comes, its all over the radio and the town is completely decorated. http://www.fairbankschamber.org/happening/2009GoldenDays.html
* Yukon Quest - Dog Sled Races that take place near January http://www.yukonquest.com/
*National Ice Sculpting Competition - http://www.nica.org/main.cfm?CFID=2452977&CFTOKEN=c3805620b28244a1-00EDF2AB-CA1A-DC10-A82C9EB282D1F770

Discounts:
Most places give discounts in town for Military People. You just have to ask, it never hurts. Some of the places in town are McDonalds, Wendys, Denny's, Lowes, Home Depot, and many more.
